The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. The following are some of the calls the Delta police responded to in the previous week:
Ladner
Jan. 6, 1:09 p.m., 4800-block of 55B Street: Complainant reported her vehicle had been broken into overnight while parked on the street. The rear passenger window had been broken causing approximately $300 damage. Her wallet was stolen along with her B.C. driver’s licence and credit cards. Her cards were used before she was able to contact her bank to have them cancelled.
Jan. 7, 2:11 p.m., Highway 17 and Highway 99: A Kia sped by an officer at a high rate of speed. Front radar locked speed at 128 km/h in an 80 km/h zone. A traffic stop was conducted and the driver was explained reason for the stop. Driver was served a ticket for excessive speed and a seven-day vehicle impoundment.
Jan. 7, 7:57 p.m., 4600-block of 51st Street: Complainant indicated a man had come into the library with a machete. The man was not acting aggressively, but had informed staff of the presence of the machete. Police attended and seized the machete for safekeeping.
Jan. 9, 3:57 p.m., 5200-block of Ladner Trunk Road: Complainant attended the community police office in Ladner to report his Switzsport brand mountain bike had been stolen. The theft occurred a few days prior and his bike had been secured via cable lock in front of a business, but the lock had been cut. Approximate value: $800.
Jan. 9, 7:46 p.m., 6400-block of Ladner Trunk Road: Officer observed a vehicle conduct several lane changes without signaling. Officer conducted a traffic stop and while speaking with the driver, noticed a strong odour of liquor coming from her breath. Approved screening device samples read “fail.” Driver was served an immediate roadside prohibition and vehicle impoundment. Driver arranged for pick up by her friend.
Jan. 10, 7:06 a.m., 4900-block of Central Avenue: Complainant called police to report her vehicle had been broken into overnight while parked on the street in front of her residence. The rear passenger window was broken and her son’s backpack was taken. Backpack valued at $20 and nothing of note was inside.
Jan. 10, 7:42 a.m., 4800-block of 47A Avenue: A break and enter to the underground secured parking lot overnight was reported. Someone entered the garage and accessed items from unsecured storage areas. It is believed they gained access through the remote controlled parking gate (likely after a resident) as the doors to the underground were secured and showed no signs of forced entry. Residents located several items out of place and only confirmed theft so far was a $700 child-carrier backpack.
Tsawwassen
Jan. 6, 12:19 p.m., 1300-block of Beach Grove Road: Complainant called to report a suspicious phone call she received that she believed to be a scam. The male caller stated her husband had won $500,000 and that all she had to do was pay $1,500 in tax to collect the winnings. Complainant wisely did not provide any information. Police attended and advised the call was definitely a scammer looking for banking/personal information.
Jan. 9, 8:20 p.m., 1200-block of 56thStreet: Police observed a man leave a parking lot and drive westbound at a high rate of speed. Police followed from a distance, and then activated emergency lights, but the vehicle sped up again. Police eventually stopped the driver for dangerous operation of motor vehicle, a criminal code offence. The driver is also facing possible charges of flight from peace officer and driving while prohibited.
Jan. 10, 5:33 p.m., 4900-block of Canoe Pass Way: Store staff reported a theft that occurred several hours earlier. Male entered the store with large duffel bags and concealed drills, worth about $200 each, before walking out. Later in day, staff reported the male was back in the store and the loss prevention officer confronted the male who admitted to stealing the drills. An agreement was made for suspect to pay for the items.
Jan. 10, 10:48 p.m., Salish Sea Drive and Blue Heron Drive: Police conducted a traffic stop to assess driver sobriety and the driver advised he had finished his last drink 30 minutes ago. Approved screening device samples resulted in “warn” twice. Driver was served and explained the three-day notice of prohibition. Vehicle towed to his residence.
Jan. 11, 6:59 a.m., 4800-block of 6thAvenue: Complainant called to report his vehicle had its rear passenger side window smashed and was rummaged through while parked on the street. A $100 bottle of tequila, $100 gift card, work binder and a $100 laser level were stolen.
Jan. 11, 10:04 a.m., 4900-block of Cedar Crescent: Report was made that his vehicle had its passenger side window broken and several construction tools, including saws and drill sets, were taken. The tools had an estimated value of $6,000. A full list of items stolen to be provided to police.
