The Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year by recognizing notable women members across the country.
Notable Women Awards have been presented to 100 CFUW women, including South Delta member Joan Wallace,who have made outstanding contributions within the organization and/or to the wider community.
Wallace has been a member of CFUW since 1952 and joined the South Delta club in 1973.
As a spokesperson for the Worker’s Compensation Board and the Canadian Red Cross, Wallace worked to increase the voice of women. She was the founding president of the BC Status of Women’s Council and was appointed to the Canadian Advisory Council by Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau. Over four years the Canadian Advisory Council changed many of the laws affecting women.
Between 1978 and 1985 Wallace was a member of the UBC Senate, the Canadian Research Institute for the Advancement of Women, and served on several human rights tribunals.
She has worked on the CFUW South Delta committee to have the city hire a social planner and to establish the first transition house in Delta.
A forward-thinking woman, Wallace has worked to implement ideas that better all women’s lives.
CFUW South Delta vice president Paula Gallagher and past president Beryl Matthewson presented Wallace with a gold pin and certificate of achievement at the CFUW September meeting.
CFUW South Delta welcomes all women who believe in education and the rights of families to thrive and succeed. A university degree is not required to join the club.
