UBC Thunderbirds’ annual homecoming football game on Saturday will also have a similar meaning for a group of players from the visiting team.

Among the 10,000 expected to be in attendance at Thunderbird Stadium will be plenty of family of friends of South Delta Sun Devils’ alumni who have leading roles for the No. 4 ranked and unbeaten (2-0-0) Calgary Dinosaurs.

Third-year linebacker Charlie Moore leads the team in tackles with 11 and also has an interception. Playing right alongside him is Grant McDonald who made his season debut in last week’s 24-10 win over Manitoba and contributed five tackles and an interception.

Fifth-year slotback Jack McDonald also figured in prominently in that game with three catches for 57-yards.

All three players were members of South Delta’s 2014 B.C. AAA championship team. They are joined by defensive back Jacob Kirk — a 2018 SDSS grad —  who red shirted last season and is now on the active roster with a tackle to his credit.

The Dinos’ Delta connection also includes twins Jalen and Tyson Philpot. The former Seaquam Seahawks stars have made a big impact at the university level. Jalen is currently Calgary’s leading receiver with seven catches for 106 yards. Tyson has made three catches for 71.

The Thunderbirds will be looking to bounce back from a pair of lopsided defeats including a 40-7 result at Saskatchewan last week.

The UBC line-up features former Sun Devil standout quarterback Michael Calvert who is in his first-season playing defensive back.

Homecoming at UBC is about so much more than just the game. It’s the Thunderbirds’ official annual welcome back to students, alumni, fans, and supporters.

The day-long festival will feature a family-friendly street party full of food vendors, games, and much more.

Homecoming 2019’s street party begins at 1 p.m. in front of Thunderbird Stadium while the game itself kicks off at 3 p.m. Tickets are available online at Ticketmaster.
