The Vancouver Waldorf School is having a party Sept. 19 to commemorate 100 years since the founding of the alternative education institution.

Students and community are invited to the centennial celebration at the main campus on St. Christopher Road in Lynn Valley.

Following its founding in 1919, there are 1,100 Waldorf schools and 2,000 kindergartens in 80 different countries, according to a release from the school.

Centennial initiatives include a worldwide postcard exchange among Waldorf students, as well as environmental initiatives including the installation of a honey bee hive.

Waldorf schools were originally founded by Rudolf Steiner, a philosopher who sought to reconcile spirituality and science, and whose political outlook in the years after the First World War made him an early enemy of Adolf Hitler.
