Richmond's annual Walkathon for Oxfam goes virtual

The annual Walkathon in Richmond in aid of Oxfam is going to be held virtually this year due to the ongoing pandemic.

Participants are being asked to walk their own neighbourhoods instead of at Garry Point Park.

The event will be held on Saturday, June 20, the same day as World Refugee Day.

For further information, contact Orval Chapman at 604-278-2543 and, if you would like to donate to the cause, you can mail your cheque to the following address:

The pandemic has made fundraising even more important for agencies like Oxfam Canada.

Oxfam, among other activities, is helping to provide accurate information in local languages in the poorest countries to help minimize the risk of infection, and is increasing the distribution of soap and strengthening sanitation services.

They are working with partners and other organizations to determine the most effective response to the crisis in 65 different countries, and will help more than 14 million people.

People from countries such as Syria, Afghanistan. Myanmar (Rohingya), Mozambique and Yemen for whom we have previously fundraised are in even more trouble now.

Another trouble spot is Gaza, where more than half of the population is living below the poverty line.
