Success is looking for Chinese-speaking volunteers to help newcomers access services.

The Richmond-based immigrant settlement organization, which has been around for 25 years, needs volunteers to assist with its helpline.

Success’s Chinese-language helplines provide emotional support and referral services for Chinese-Canadians who are experiencing difficulties accessing social services due to language and cultural barriers.

“Some immigrants are struggling to establish their new life here - a call from the helpline can equip them with the courage and resources to overcome challenges,” Queenie Choo, CEO of Success, told the Richmond News

Kind-hearted people with the ability and desire to help others would be great volunteer candidates, Choo added.

Applicants need to meet specific criteria, such as speaking both English and Chinese fluently, completing a criminal record check and be willing to volunteer four hours per week. If selected, participants are required to undergo extensive training, which includes a 40-hour professional helpline training.

“The training can help volunteers better understand the program and offer support in a professional way,” said Choo.

Choo added that lots of long-time helpline volunteers get a deep sense of fulfillment after helping people from all walks of life. Being a volunteer not only benefits others, but also enriches their own life.

“No matter what kind of upheavals they are going through, there will always be compassionate people who care and want to be there for people who are suffering,” said Choo.
