As winter kicks in, a Richmond non-profit is asking for more volunteers to help the city’s seniors get to appointments, the grocery store and have more social interaction.

The winter months, says Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives (RCRG), can bring community life to a standstill.

Transportation becomes more difficult, and even going outside can be a chilly, slippery proposition.

For seniors with mobility issues, snowy weather and sub-zero temperatures can prevent them from getting to medical appointments, shopping for groceries, or participating in social activities.

RCRG works with a large team of volunteers to ensure that older adults have access to transportation, fresh groceries, and social interaction, even in the midst of winter.

And following Richmond’s first snowfall of the season, more volunteers are needed.

“Volunteer drivers, grocery shopping assistants, friendly visitors – we require additional help in all of these areas,” said Carol Dickson, RCRG’s manager of Community Support Services. “Even a few hours a week makes a big difference.”

Hundreds of older adults rely on RCRG and its volunteers to maintain their independence and stay connected to the community.

“Our goal is to provide safe, reliable services, so that seniors know they can call on us when they need help,” added Dickson.

“Whether it’s a trip to the doctor, or a check-in from a friendly visitor, we’re here to support healthy aging throughout the year.”
