To celebrate Canada Music Week, more than 10 of the city’s most promising young music talents will take part in a recital hosted by the Richmond Branch of the BC Registered Music Teachers Association (BCRMTA) Nov. 17 at the South Arm United Church.
The advanced students, who have just passed their Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) examinations with honors, will perform a varied selection of music, with emphasis on works by Canadian composers.
“These talented performers will play everything from classical music to work produced by contemporary music composers on the grand piano,” said Sinyu Tsang, spokesperson of BCRMTA.
Tsang is encouraging the community to support these young musicians. Regardless whether “you are a music expert or you don’t know anything about music, we encourage you to join us,” added Tsang.
A highlight of the event will be a performance by pianist William Lin, who took first prize in the Canadian Federation of Music Teachers’ Association (CFMTA)’s student composer competition. He will showcase his award-winning pieces.
Along with the opportunity to perform, each performer will receive an award and a flower in recognition of their musical achievement and community contribution.
Tsang noted there are a lot of benefits for young music lovers to perform in the recital.
“Students who learn from private tutors might not have enough opportunities to display their skills on a big stage,” said Tsang.
“But they can build self-confidence and develop a sense of pride through taking part in the concert.”
The recital will take place at South Arm United Church on Nov. 17 starting at 1:30 p.m. Tickets are $2 per person or $5 per family at the door.
