This year, seniors’ communities have been the focus of much media attention due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many senior residences have been slow to react to the changes that the situation requires and their residents have, unfortunately, suffered from it.

But some have acted swiftly by putting extremely safe precautionary practices in place.

One retirement residence right here in Richmond has managed to fend off COVID-19 while providing entertainment, joy and, most importantly, hope to its 130-plus residents.

Nestled between the Fraser River and the Strait of Georgia waterways, Gilmore Gardens enjoys beautiful views of coastal mountain ranges, plenty of park space, plus shopping and restaurants close by. Built in 1999, Gilmore Gardens Retirement Residence is an icon within the community and known for its elegant architecture, quality, comfort and warmth.

What has made the Gilmore Gardens experience so different is its staff that has not only adjusted to these uncertain times, but has also thrived.

The efforts of staff have not gone unnoticed as residents and their families have gone out of their way to write kind letters, as well as bring them flowers and homemade goodies.

During the pandemic, residents have enjoyed services such as Happy Hour drink deliveries to their doors, regular puzzles, brain games and at-home exercises. The bubbly staff has enriched and thrilled residents with door-side birthday celebrations and gifts for special holidays.

“We are so thankful for the diligence and dedication of our staff, residents, family and friends to keep everyone healthy and safe,” says Mirandah Sinden, the general manager, adding that their team is what has made Gilmore Gardens a true success story in these unprecedented times.

Gilmore Gardens has moved into its next phase of easing restrictions with the reintroduction of in-person exercise classes and the return of lunch and dinner services in its main dining room with ample physical distancing.

Contrary to popular belief, retirement residences are safe places to be in times like this. Seniors’ communities like Gilmore Gardens have procedures in place that limit the number of people coming in and going out. They also have better access to personal protective equipment, food and other necessities than the general public.

Gilmore Gardens makes life joyful and inspiring for its residents. To get in touch, call their Assistant General Manager Lynn Van de Kamp or Community Relations Coordinator Yathu Radhakrishnan at 604-271-7222, or visit their website.
