Islanders take their careers to collegiate level

Members of 2000B championship team head to Kelowna, Calgary and London

Fresh off a decorated season with the Richmond 2000B Islanders, four members have taken their careers to the collegiate level.

Harper Gibson and Jessica Porter are members of the UBC Okanagan Heat that are off to impressive start in their inaugural season in the Western Collegiate Softball Association with a 4-2-1 record. They happened to face their teammate Racquel Bennett who is in her second season with the University of Calgary Dinos. Another Islander — Shanelle Gutenenberg — is also studying at the Kelowna campus and is a member of the Heat's junior varsity development team.

Further east, MacKenzie Last has signed with Western University in London, Ont. where the Mustangs also play a fall season that culminates with the Ontario and Canadian Championships in early October.

The Islanders wrapped up a tremendous campaign last month by capturing the Western Canadian U19 Championship with a perfect run in Alberta. That triumph came on the heels of winning Softball B.C.’s U19B Provincials in Nanaimo and the Canada Cup Tournament in South Surrey.
