Sockeyes Alumni Game Saturday

Wyatt Russell among players scheduled to play

Wyatt Russell with his parents Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell after the Richmond Sockeyes' Cyclone Taylor Cup victory in 2003. Wyatt will be playing in the Sockeyes annual Alumni Game on Saturday night.

His famous Hollywood parents were regulars at Minoru Arena for two straight seasons, now Wyatt Russell will be in Richmond Sockeyes’ colours again for the team’s 15th annual Alumni Game on Saturday night.
Russell was just 16 when he earned a spot on the Sockeyes roster during the 2002-03 season, backing up veteran goaltender Kevin McKay. A year later he took on the bulk of the crease work and helped Richmond repeat as Cyclone Taylor Cup provincial champions. Russell’s two biggest fans were his parents — actors Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn — who purchased a house in Shaughnessy during their son’s hockey stint north of the border..
Wyatt would go on to play two years at the junior “A” level before earning a scholarship to the University of Alabama. He took his career to Europe, playing professional in Germany and the Dutch Elite League. A nagging hip injury forced him to retire in 2010. He has since followed his parents’ path and launched a successful acting career.
Russell won’t be back between the pipes Saturday. Instead, he will be among the skaters when alumni take on the current Sockeyes team at 5:45 p.m at Minoru.
Other past players slated to participate include: Kootenay Alder, Aaron Oakley. Adam Nishi, John Crang, Keenan Webb, Scott Wessa, Turner Popoff, Troy Paterson, Kevin Kimura, Jordan Andrews. Forwards — Cormac Brennan, Sean Thorsteinson, Rudy Thorsteinson, Jeff Gee, Jeremy Hamaguchi, Trevor Hamaguchi, Mike Heath, Clayton Chessa, Daniel Oakley, Patrick Hunter, Trevor Lima.
The alumni staff features: coaches — Maurice Lambert, Doug Paterson, Don Taylor and Brooke Odenvald. Trainer — Anson Barrows. Governor — Gord Hayes.
Tickets are $10 and available at the door.
The night has been a big part of the Sockeyes Alumni Scholarship Foundation. All money raised is distributed to graduating players to assist with post-secondary education.
