A pair of shorthanded goals powered the Richmond Sockeyes to a 4-2 win over the Mission City Outlaws on Saturday night to remain perfect through the opening week of the Pacific Junior Hockey League regular season.
Ryleigh Anderson’s goal at the 5:51 mark of the third period proved to be the game winner. It came after rookie Garrett Wicks also scored shorthanded three minutes earlier. Craig Schouten’s second of the game then sealed the win for the visitors.
Richmond outshot Mission 40-21 on the night with Jacob Stone picked up his first win as a Sockeye.
The result came two days after the Sockeyes opened the season with a 5-3 home ice win over the White Rock Whalers.
Rookie Easton Elmer’s second of the night broke a 3-3 deadlock in the early stages of the third period. Gabriel Parent added an empty netter with 21 seconds remaining.
Twice Richmond erased one goal deficits in the opening period on goals by Elmer and captain Noah Kelly. Marcus Pantazis gave the hosts their first lead of the night with 2:27 left in the second.
Mauricio Soriano-McKinnon made 17 saves for the win. Richmond is back in action on Wednesday in Langley, before hosting the Ridge Meadows Flames on Thursday at 7 p.m at Minoru Arenas.
