In the downtown area, the City of New Westminster moved forward on its plans to close Front Street to vehicle traffic on weekends, so there is more space for people to walk, wheel and bike this summer.

Justin Turcotte was there and filmed an incredible video that you can see below showing what it was like to cycle through this area without any fear of big trucks coming.

It's a fun glimpse into what happens when trucks are banned for a couple of days.

Perhaps you can try it out this weekend or at some point during the summer.

“Opening Front Street to walking, wheeling and biking offers the community an exciting opportunity to experience a connected riverfront all the way from Begbie Street to Sapperton Landing,” Mayor Jonathan Cote said recently.

“Local businesses are open to serve visitors, and it will be the ideal spot for both staying active or taking in the sights of historic Front Street.”

The city is prohibiting motor vehicle traffic, including trucks, from being on Front Street between East Columbia and Begbie streets from 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. every Saturday, Sunday and holiday until Labour Day. Vehicle access to Front Street businesses remains open via Front Street Frontage Road.

The City of New Westminster invites businesses and community members to contact the transportation department to discuss ideas for events that could take place along the Front Street on weekends this summer.
