Fundraising efforts continue as our community eagerly awaits the decision on the $8M Investing in Canada Infrastructure grant application for the Bowen Island Community Centre. If the grant outcome is successful, the municipality will move forward with an elector approval process to secure the remaining funds needed to start construction of the shovel-ready project. It is anticipated that ongoing fundraising will off-set the amount BIM ultimately needs to borrow.

The project team’s next initiative is an online auction of five, mini, bronze-cast grizzly bear cubs, generously donated by award-winning local artist, Cathryn Jenkins. These adorable bears are part of the limited-edition series, “Waiting for Mama”, depicting young grizzly bear cubs waiting for mama bear to come back from the river.  Each unique cub is carefully crafted and cast by hand before being signed and numbered. The cubs all exude a little “joie de vivre” that will instantly make you want to take one home.

For your chance to meet the little cubs in person, please visit “Chin Up”, “Footsie”, and “Little Brother” at Municipal Hall. “Gentle Cub” and “There’s Mama” are displayed at the Cove Commons. The bears will be on display from August 23 until October 25, 2019.

Each cub is valued at $395 each.  Bidding will begin at $300 in our online auction on the project Facebook page: facebook.com/bowenislandcommunitycentre/ with individual auction posts for each bear.   Get your final bids in before 4 p.m. on October 25 for a chance to take your favourite bear home.

We appreciate your continued support for the Community Centre project and would like to express our gratitude to Cathryn Jenkins for donating these wonderful grizzly cubs for such a worthy cause.
