Are you a family caregiver? If you’re providing care and support for a family member or friend who is disabled, chronically ill, frail or elderly, you are a caregiver.

Caregiving for a loved one can be a rewarding experience but it can also be a source of stress, frustration and exhaustion. The unending responsibilities and lack of rest can put the health of the caregiver at risk.

It is important for caregivers to learn how to care for themselves and get the support they need early in the caregiving journey.

The South Delta Caregivers’ Network offers a six-week education series and support group twice a year. The next series starts on Wednesday, Oct. 23 and runs from 1 to 3 p.m. once a week. The one-time fee of $40 includes the six sessions with coffee and refreshments, as well as unlimited monthly drop-in support groups.

Topics include caregiver stress, communication techniques, difficult behaviours, role and lifestyle changes, accessing community resources, and financial and legal issues. The support group offers social contact and information, and emotional support with other people who understand what it is like to be a caregiver.

The series is held at the Centre for Supportive Care in Ladner. To register, call the centre at 604-948-0660.
