It may be called the RapidBus, but it’s taking its sweet time getting here.

TransLink is warning the North Shore their R2 express bus is likely now going to begin service either late winter or early spring 2020.

“Which is a few weeks later than we’d originally been aiming for,” said TransLink spokesman Ben Murphy in an email.

The delay is thanks largely to groundworks along the route to accommodate the bus lanes and pullouts getting behind schedule.

“Given construction work is occurring in many different areas along the Marine Drive corridor, our contractor has encountered conditions which are tricky to anticipate,” Murphy said.

Because of the way drivers’ shifts are scheduled months in advance, the anticipated start date is now either February or April.

When it is up an running, the Marine Drive route will have a capacity of 1,650 people per hour during rush hour.

“We look forward to delivering this new high-frequency service and will provide updates in due course,” Murphy said.
