Simon Fraser University is feeling right at home at the Richmond Country Club.

The hosts lead the way after the opening round of the inaugural True North Classic — the first-ever NCAA golf tournament to be held in Canada.

Simon Fraser shot a team score 295 for a nine stroke lead over Western Washington (304) and a 16 shot advantage on third-place Concordia (Ore.) (311) —  on the par 72, 5,965 yard layout. SFU placed all four scoring golfers in the top 10 of individual stroke play.

Jaya Rampuri and Richmond’s Estee Leung are tied for second afternoon shooting 72s — one shot back of Concordia’s Cammie Decker. Emily Leung is tied for sixth after firing a 75.

The final round takes place on Tuesday morning with the awards ceremony slated for 2 p.m.

Other teams competing in the women’s event include: Holy Names (California), Academy of Art, (California), Hawaii Hilo, Colorado Christian, Northwest Nazarene (Idaho), Montana State Billings, UBC Okanagan and University of Fraser Valley.

“The True North Classic is breaking new ground for our program and when I look at where our program was five years ago to now, and the amazing growth that has taken place, there are a lot of people to thank," said SFU head coach Matt Steinbach. "We are excited to host US teams and compete on Canadian soil for the first time.”
