Parents are a Drag is one of the events at Massey Theatre for its Under the Rainbow Family Weekend, coming up for Family Day weekend.

The Massey Theatre is celebrating diverse families this Family Day weekend.

The theatre is hosting special events Feb. 14 and 15 as part of its Under the Rainbow series, designed to shine a spotlight on LGBTQ+ programming.

All families are invited and encouraged to take part.

The Wizard of Oz:

On Friday, Feb. 14, the classic 1939 film returns to the big screen for a 7 p.m. showing. Everyone is invited to join Dorothy as she meets the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion and they embark on their memorable adventure – with songs along the way. Audience members are encouraged to dress in their Wizard of Oz-inspired outfits for the occasion.

Everyone’s also invited to head to the Plaskett Gallery after the movie for a post-show discussion that will look at the movie’s fascinating legacy within the gay community.

Tickets are $5 for all seats.

 

The Flight of the Hummingbird:

On Saturday, Feb. 15 at 11 a.m., families are invited to take in this contemporary 45-minute opera by Vancouver Opera and Pacific Opera Victoria. 

The Flight of the Hummingbird is based on an Indigenous parable from the Quechuan people of South America. The story of the brave hummingbird travelled through pre-contact trade routes to become well known within Haida Culture. The opera, created for young audiences, is includes by the graphic novel written by Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas and will include elements of his dramatic Haida-manga illustrations.

This new opera features four singers and a small ensemble, with music by Maxime Goulet and libretto by Michael Nicoll Yahuglanaas (Haida) and Barry Gilson. Stage director is Glynis Leyshon, with musical direction by Kinza Tyrrell.

Tickets are $12 for adults and $7 for students.

 

Parents are a Drag:

On Saturday, Feb. 15 at 4 p.m., you can join local drag queens Peach Cobblah and Isolde N. Barron for a drag dress-up spectacular that reminds young ones, parents and caregivers that it’s never too early – or too late – to get silly and dress up. Parents are a Drag celebrates diversity with songs, laughter and play. There will be chances for the audience to get involved in the show, so come dressed to impressed or ready for some dress-up time.

Written and produced by Zee Zee Theatre’s artistic and executive director, Cameron Mackenzie, and playwright-in-residence and associate producer Dave Deveau, the work fulfils the theatre company’s mandate of telling diverse stories and amplifying the voices of those on the margins.

Tickets are $12 adults, $7 for students.
