Retired New Westminster city councillor and longtime volunteer Lorrie Williams is organizing a fundraiser for the Canadian Harambee Education Society. It's celebrating International Women's Day.

An upcoming celebration for International Women’s Day will help girls in Africa to attend high school.

Longtime New West resident Lorrie Williams founded the Canadian Harambee Education Society in 1986 to help girls in Kenya and Tanzania to further their education. Because of support from the society, thousands of girls have been able to attend high school.

A fundraiser for the Canadian Harambee Education Society is taking place on Sunday, March 8 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Sapperton Pensioners Hall, 318 Keary St. Doors open at 5 p.m. and dinner is at 6 p.m.

Along with dinner, attendees can enjoy a silent auction, shopping for unique items at the African boutique and entertainment by Quayside Voices. Special guests include Kenyan ambassador John Lanyasuya, award-winning broadcast journalist Erica Johnson, who produced Educating Margaret, a documentary about the society.

Tickets ($20 or $10 for kids 12 and under) are available at the door.
