An RCMP emergency response team descended on a quiet residential street in Upper Lynn Valley Friday afternoon after a 32-year-old man entered the home of an elderly woman and refused to leave.
Police were called out around noon by a woman who told them a stranger had walked into her house on Dempsey Road while she was home alone.
Police told the woman to leave the house, which she did, said Sgt. Peter DeVries of the North Vancouver RCMP.
Police then surrounded the home and spent over an hour convincing the man, who is known to police, to come outside.
The situation resolved peacefully at about 1:30 p.m.
Police arrested the man for break and enter and being unlawfully in a dwelling house.
He was taken to hospital for evaluation, said DeVries.
DeVries added there were no weapons or threats involved. The resident doesn’t know the man who entered her home and has had no previous interactions with him, DeVries added.
Earlier in the day, several residents phoned the North Shore News to report they had seen at least six police cars heading up Mountain Highway at a high rate of speed.
A police helicopter was also called out for back-up support.
Police blocked off an area of Dempsey Road near Mountain Highway while police convinced the man to leave the house.
Traffic in the area was back to normal by about 2:30 p.m.
