If you’re looking for fresh produce and homemade items, the Kwantlen St. Farmers Market is officially open for business.

The weekly market – which runs every Tuesday until October from noon to 4 p.m. – has opened for the season at their new location in Brighouse Park.

Kwantlen St. Market announced on Twitter that the change in location was to “better accommodate (their) physical distancing safety plan” for patrons.

Palwinder Singh, vice-president of external affairs of the Kwantlen Student Association, said they are glad to see the market open and running again in a safe way.

“BC Centre for Disease Control (BC CDC) recognized farmers markets are an essential service, (which) allowed us the necessary lead-time to work in collaboration with our farm vendors, food producers, and the City of Richmond to develop a comprehensive safety plan,” said Singh.

“The market is following guidelines to allow for proper physical distancing … (and) customer traffic is being managed to keep patrons safe.”

The market, which is running for its sixth year, offers student-grown produce from Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s Sustainable Agriculture Program as well as other products from community vendors.

Until the BC CDC lifts restrictions on products such as soap, jewelry, crafts and live entertainment, the market will focus on consumable products only.

All markets in B.C. operate under these same guidelines, and implement a "shop-don't-stop" policy to reduce gatherings in any one place.

The City of Richmond is also offering one-hour free parking passes to market shoppers, which are available at the market entrance.

Applications are still being accepted for vendors interested in opening a stall at the market.

Kwantlen St. Market will run until Oct. 6 this year.
