Vancouver’s fire department is giving residents another way to keep cool this summer

The department launched Summer Splash earlier this month bringing a pop-up spray park to a different park across the city every Thursday until the end of August. The event typically runs from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m.

This week crews will be at Jericho Beach.

The department started the pop-up spray parks to help residents keep cool during a heat wave last August and public information officer Jonathan Gormick said it was so popular the department decided to make it a regular event.

In addition to the mobile spray-park, Summer Splash also gives residents a chance to check out some of the department’s specialty teams, including technical rescue, the marine unit and the hazardous materials team.

“Most people’s only interaction with VFRS is the rare time they might be involved with an incident, whereas this is a chance to meet staff and look at apparatus in a casual, fun setting,” Gormick said in an email.

The event is weather dependent — it’s on if the temperature is at least 25-degrees. Check out @vanfirerescue on Twitter, or @vancouverfirerescueservices on Facebook, after 1 p.m. on Thursdays for updates on the Summer Splash status.
