Facebook videos reveal details of Camp Cloud arrests

Footage from a body camera shows a woman being carried away on a stretcher after being arrested at Trans Mountain pipeline protest site Camp Cloud on Burnaby mountain.

Videos posted on Camp Cloud’s Facebook page are shedding light on what happened when protesters were arrested on Burnaby mountain earlier this week.

NOW reporter Kelvin Gawley was on the scene Thursday morning to witness the removal of the camp, but was threatened with arrest if he did not leave the “exclusion zone” set up by Burnaby R.C.M.P. The protest group has been monitoring the movements of Trans Mountain workers at the tank farm since November, 2017.

Xenoa Skinteh, a protester who regularly broadcasts from the page, posted a Facebook live video of his arrest Thursday morning.

A second video by an unknown protester was later uploaded to page. This video, which appears to be shot from a body camera or GoPro, documents interactions between police and protesters inside one of the camp’s structures. It includes footage of the video maker’s arrest, his interactions with police and release.

In the first video, Skinteh is heard telling the police he will move his truck and leave willingly. He says he does not want to be arrested.

A man, who appears to be an R.C.M.P. officer, is heard telling him and the others in the camp that they are under arrest.

“Excuse me, I’m actually trying to leave though, sir, please. Please sir —” Skinteh is heard saying.

“You’re under arrest. Don’t move, don’t move,” an officer responds.

The video cuts off shortly after Skinteh asks police not to arrest him.

“Please, no. Please, sir. No, I’m actually leaving. I didn’t want to — please, no,” Skinteh says. “Please sir! No! Please don’t arrest me. Hello! Please don’t arrest me! Hello! No!”

The video shot by the second protestor shows a different experience.

The person making the video is told that he is under arrest for violating a civil injunction, and told to put his hands behind his back.

Officers are seen entering the camp, speaking with the other occupants, and dismantling structures. A woman is seen being carried away on a sitting stretcher, and two other men are arrested. The whole interaction lasts around 40 minutes.

The video’s poster appears to have muted portions of the video that disclose personal details, including names, addresses and phone numbers.
