A Richmond resident was the victim in the fatal and fiery road crash at the Peace Arch border crossing last week.
On Thursday, May 2, Rev. Tom Cheung was killed after the minivan he was driving and a Porsche SUV collided and caught fire.
According to a statement released by friends of the family, Cheung was a “loving husband of Athens, a caring devoted father of Solomon, Benjamin and Elisha; and a generous Pastor with lots of love and patience to many.”
Cheung, the lead pastor of Port Moody Pacific Grace MB Church, immigrated to Canada from Hong Kong in 1996 and lived at the family home near No. 9 Road and Westminster Highway for many years.
Friends say he was a man “who loved God and his word dearly. Many lives are blessed, transformed, and renewed through Tom and Athens’ ministries. Despite many challenges and difficulties, he remained faithful…and continued helping people and leading people to Christ.
“The tragic loss has brought unimaginable devastation to the family. Tom was the main provider for the family; a way to help is to relieve the family from their financial burden…”
Friends have set up a GoFundMe page, at GoFundMe.com/TomCheung, which had raised $2,500 of its $100,000 goal by 8 a.m. Wednesday.
Witnesses to last week’s accident described seeing one car rear-end the other, sending them both into the bushes before Cheung’s Toyoto Sienna caught fire.
The driver of the other vehicle was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries, but Cheung died at the scene.
Details of Cheung's memorial service are still being finalized.
