An 88-year-old woman died after being struck by a driver in Burnaby on Wednesday afternoon.

Burnaby RCMP said that the senior has died, according to an email. The woman was hit by a driver driving an SUV at the intersection of Willingdon and Beresford.

*ORIGINAL STORY*

A senior citizen is in critical condition in hospital after being struck by a driver in what some have called Burnaby’s worst intersection.

The accident happened at 1 p.m. at the intersection of Willingdon and Beresford.

Burnaby RCMP says its Criminal Collision Investigation Team (CCIT) continues to investigate.

“The driver of the vehicle that struck the pedestrian remained on scene and is cooperating with the police investigation,” said a news release. “The pedestrian, an 88-year-old woman remains in hospital with life-threatening injuries. While the circumstances of what led up to the collision are still under investigation, alcohol and speed are not believed to be factors in this collision.”

Police are asking that anyone who may have witnessed this collision or potentially have dash cam video in the area when the collision took place to contact Burnaby RCMP at 604-646-9999 or if you wish to remain anonymous contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).The elderly woman was struck by the driver of a SUV that was turning right to head south on Willingdon.

This past summer, the City of Burnaby made numerous changes to this intersection following years of complaints from area residents. The intersection involved drivers on Beresford trying to inch across Willingdon, so the city put up barriers to stop east-west traffic. Drivers heading north on Willingdon are able to turn left.

Fencing was erected to stop people from crossing, forcing them to go north to the light.
