A taxi driver and a passenger were taken to hospital after the cab struck a median, flipped onto its roof and slammed into parked cars on Esquimalt Road in Vic West.

First responders were called to the 700 block of Esquimalt Road just before 3 a.m. Saturday.

The BlueBird cab had been heading west on Esquimalt Road.

The driver and passenger were all out of the vehicle when firefighters arrived, said battalion chief Greg Batters.

Considering the damage to the vehicle, everyone was fortunate to have received only cuts and bruises, Batters said.

“They were very fortunate. Our guys were shocked as to how lucky they were,” he said.

The cab drove onto the median, causing it to flip, take out some trees and hit some parked cars, said Victoria police spokesman Const. Matt Rutherford.

“We’re still investigating, but speed appears to be a contributing factor,” he said.
