Marine Drive is set be closed between Fell to Bewicke avenues this weekend as workers take the first steps toward replacing Mosquito Creek Bridge.

Local business access will be provided and detours will be in effect this weekend. However, with heavy traffic expected, the City of North Vancouver is advising drivers to avoid the area from 7 p.m. Friday to 11 p.m. Sunday.

Beginning Monday, the bridge will be reduced to one lane in either direction. After five months, the first phase of the project will be complete and two new lanes will be opened, according to staff.

The removal of the Mosquito Creek Bridge is scheduled for early this summer as the city aims to replace the 1952-era span with a new four-lane bridge with improved pedestrian and cyclist facilities.

Since 2018, the budget for the project has grown from $8 million to $13 million. A federal grant will cover $3.87 million of the total. TransLink has chipped in $1.65 million.
