South Delta instructor/art therapist Teresa Massel is getting ready to start her next series of wellness classes.

Art for Women’s Wellness will be offered Monday nights from 7 to 8:30 p.m. for six weeks starting Oct. 22. The classes will be at the South Delta Recreation Centre in Tsawwassen and are open to women only ages 19-plus.

Participants will learn how therapeutic art making and interpreting your own artworks can help increase your emotional well-being and resilience. Each class consists of several art exercises, reflective writing and psychological information giving. No art making experience is required. No verbal processing is encouraged during the class.

Massel ran classes earlier in the year that were a success.

“I had a solid group of eight women – they loved it – it was life changing for them,” she said. “This time around it’s a shorter, better version. I plan to offer the classes again in May and June next year. I want this to be an ongoing thing.”

She said the idea for the classes came from her more than 20 years as a registered art therapist.

“I’m passionate about providing therapeutic services to people who can’t afford private therapy, so that’s why I’m doing the classes. They are low cost - $100 for nine and a half hours of psychological information classes, focusing on women only, and on emotional wellness. Hopefully I’m teaching adult women how to use therapeutic art for their emotional well-being.”

Those wishing to register for the classes can do so through Delta’s Leisure Guide (http://delta.ca/parks-recreation/sport-recreation/registration).

There are only 10 spots available.

If classes fill up, participants wishing to learn about more about Massel’s future classes can email her at: deltaarttherapy@gmail.com.
