The Matchmaker, currently on at the Stanley Theatre, is two hours of colourful and hilarious entertainment.  Director Ashlie Corcoran chose her cast with an unerring eye, and the resultant characters are all spot on.

Nicola Lipman is outstanding as the shrewd and manipulative Dolly Levi, a good foil for blustering Ric Reid as Horace Vandergelder.

The younger actors provide a lot of the physical action and humour,  all excellently done, and Scott Bellis does a perfect turn as a philosophical drunk. There’s even an out-of-control operatic diva, excellently played by Nora McLellan.

Drew Facey’s over-the-top turn-of-the-century set, with appropriate - and sometimes surprising – costumes, frames the action with colour and style.

The humour is both wild and physical, often sly and ironic, as the characters turn to the audience to explain their motivation.  Always entertaining, with some interesting commentary on human nature that only enhances the fun and enjoyment.

Catch it while you can.  On till Feb. 24.
