A memorial advertisement for the 30th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre was recently defaced with newspaper.

According to transit user Karen Felix, the electronic ad had been running for about three weeks at the No. 3 Road and Westminster Highway bus shelter. But, when she arrived at the stop Friday morning, torn newspapers were glued to the plastic screen in front of the ad.

“This morning it was plastered with newspapers,” said Felix.

She said she assumes the vandalism is the work of those supporting the Chinese government against the Hong Kong protestors. Tension between supporters of each group has been playing out throughout the Lower Mainland in recent weeks.

“I really wanted to clean it up before the bus came, but (thought) maybe there is a police investigation going on, so I better not mess with it.”

She noted there were two City of Richmond pylons in front of the shelter and said she hoped the city would clean it up soon.

Richmond News reached out to TransLink for comment, but a spokesperson said maintenance of the shelter is the responsibility of the city. However, Clay Adams, Richmond’s spokesperson said that Pattison Outdoor Advertising is in charge of the bus shelter’s advertisements and maintenance. TheNews has reached out to Pattison Outdoor Advertising, but did not hear back prior to publishing.
