Richmond RCMP are looking for a vehicle passenger, after they fled on foot during a traffic stop that led to an investigation for possible explosives.

Around 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Mounties pulled an early 2000 era Chrysler over after it was seen without a front license plate near Granville Avenue and Cooney Road. However, when the vehicle was pulled over, the front passenger ran away.

The driver of the Chrysler, who is well known to police, stayed behind. Officers then searched for the passenger but he remains outstanding.

According to RCMP, when the car was pulled over, officers noticed “several suspicious cylindrical devices,” and the Lower Mainland Explosive Disposal Unit was called in to investigate. The unit used robotic equipment to search the cordoned off area, but no explosives were found. The area was reopened at around 8 p.m.

RCMP say they are still investigating the incident.
