Whenever the Leo Awards are handed out over three nights, the second night – formally referred to as Celebration Awards Ceremony Two – is arguably the most fun.

Celebration Awards One – AKA craft awards night, the 2016 edition of which took place last weekend – is, while festive, casual and low-key. It serves up a stark contrast to the third night: a red carpet gala that is as fancy-pants and high stakes as it gets for Vancouver’s homegrown film and TV industry.

But Celebration Awards Ceremony Two sits (both literally and figuratively) squarely between the casual cocktail reception and the glamorous red carpet gala. It’s a party night where the audience is boisterous, the speeches are honest, emotional, and funny, and, when technical difficulties arise (as they always do in a live show), the host and crowd roll with the punches.

Actress Veena Sood (Numb) hosted the ceremony, which shone the spotlight on locally made documentaries, children’s programming, animated and web series, music videos, lifestyle and information shows, as well as casting, stunts, and guest performances. Peruse the full results below.

Emotions ran high when one of the producers of Best Feature Length Documentary Program winner Johnny Cash: American Rebel – who also produced 2009’s Facing Ali – used his speech to ask the crowd to observe a moment of silence in honour of Muhammad Ali – as well as when Cole Howard, who won Best Performance in an Animated Series for Bob’s Broken Sleigh, visibly choked up when he expressed his gratitude to, and admiration for, his fellow nominees.

The Leo Awards recognize excellence in British Columbia’s dynamic film and television industry. The 2016 Leo Awards wrap up tonight with a red carpet gala. Follow @sabrinarmf for tweets from the red carpet and watch this space for next-day results.
