Top 5 things to do this Friday in Vancouver

March 13, 2015

Get booming: The Imperial is turned into the Boom Booms' room  tonight when the East Van sextet hit the ptage in support of their second feature length album Love Is Overdue. See for yourselves what makes them one of Gregor Robertson’s -- not to mention plenty of other less prominent Vancouverites' --  favourite local bands. Chin Injeti and Star Captain open.

Get arrogant: Long-running Kingston trio and CBC stalwarts the Arrogant Worms bring their CanCon musical comedy shtick to St. James Hall tonight in support of their 14th album Space, where they tackle such topics as yoga pants, uncomfortable chairs, vegetarian zombies and Rob Ford.

Get laughing: The unlucky in love Phil Hanley, who started his comedy career in Vancouver and has gone on to appear at Just for Laughs and John Oliver’s New York Stand-Up Show for Comedy Central, is back in town for two sets tonight and tomorrow at the Comedy Mix. Erica Sigurdson and Kevin Banner will also tell a few jokes too.

Wave the flag: Political punk rockers from Pittsburg Anti-Flag celebrate the 10-year anniversary of their breakthrough, Tom Morello-produced album The Terror State by playing it in its entirety tonight at Venue. (The record actually came out in 2003, but that’s no reason to be a hater.) They also have a new one out called American Spring, so expect to hear a few tracks from that one too.

Get the way we were: Senior citizens and young gay men will be rubbing shoulders tonight at the Orpheum Theatre as Broadway star Ann Hampton Callaway joins the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra to pay tribute to the top-selling songs of the iconic Barbra Streisand.
