Top 5 things to do this Monday in Vancouver

March 23, 2015

Channel your inner Comic Book Guy: The Waldorf’s weekly Woo Hoo Classic Simpsons Trivia gang are celebrating their first anniversary with a Diorama-rama, where comedy fans with time on their hands can build a shoebox-sized diorama of their favourite scenes from the long-running animated classic first nine seasons for a chance to win prizes.

Get dirty: As part of their ongoing Monday night spotlight on historic B.C. films, the Cinematheque is screening director Bruce Sweeney’s 1998 kinky comedy Dirty, in which the late, great Babz Chula plays a dope-dealing, middle-aged mom involved in a spank-happy sexual relationship with David (Tom Scholte), a university student half her age. Sweeney himself will be on hand for a Q&A afterward and his early short Betty and Vera Go Lawn Bowling will start things off at 7 p.m.

Check out some live music: Seattle five-piece and face-paint fans NoRey play their very first Vancouver gig tonight at the Biltmore Cabaret as part of a lineup that also includes the Wayward Hearts, Warless and Laura Reynek.

Sharpen your writing skills: The pen may well be mightier than the sword as playwright Edward Bulwer-Lytton famously pointed out but writing about swordplay can be tough without first-hand experience. Authors C. C. Humphreys, Sebastien de Castell and Kris Sayer will discuss their own personal adventures with various weapons tonight in the Alice MacKay Room at the main branch of the Vancouver Public Library, which will also include live sword fights, as part of the Vancouver International Swordplay Symposium.

Get amused: Noted funnyman, Stop Podcasting Yourself co-host and acclaimed beard painter Graham Clark hosts his weekly Laugh Gallery stand-up round-up at the Havana on Commercial Drive starting at 9 p.m.
