Top 5 things to do this Thursday in Vancouver

March 12, 2015

Watch some dancing: Montréal-based choreographer and performer Benoît Lachambre’s slithery new work Snakeskins, featuring dancer Daniele Albanese performing solo to music by Hahn Rowe, premieres tonight at Roundhouse Performance Centre as part of the Vancouver International Dance Festival.

Check out six new plays: The Brave New Play Rites festival returns to Granville Island’s Studio 1398 with the premiere of a dozen new plays by UBC Creative Writing students. Started in 1986, this annual drama fest features two rotating programs of six plays each night. Tonight’s lineup includes The Quizmaster by Deborah Vogt, Swordplay by Chloe Rose, Fog Lights by Annahis Basmadjian, Everyone's A Winner by Emily Swan, The Letter A by Carolyn Nakagawa, and a play about Edmonton called The Play About Edmonton by Jake Prins.

Get cheering: The Canucks hope to continue their two-game winning streak over west coast rivals when they take on the Stanley Cup’s defending champs tonight at Rogers Arena. The L.A. Kings have won both match-ups so far this season but are currently out of playoff contention at ninth place in the West. Look for head coach Willie Desjardin to try and keep riding the hot hands of Zack Kassian and rookie Bo Horvat when the puck drops tonight at 7 p.m.

Rub elbows with the wealthy elite: No, tonight’s networking night at the Vancouver Club dubbed “Shoulders of Titans: Meet The Man Behind The $360-Million Dollar Trump Tower” won’t feature an appearance by Donald Trump himself but rather Joo Kim Tiah, the 33-year-old son of one of Malaysia’s richest families and the CEO of the Holborn Group. And who has much better hair.

Help make up your mind on how to vote: The Anza Club hosts an open forum on the upcoming transit plebiscite featuring a panel discussion with NDP MLA George Heyman, environmental activist Ben West, Alliance of BC Students co-chair Bahareh Jokar and Fairware head honcho Denise Taschereau.
