West Vancouver police impound speeding supercar

West Vancouver police impounded a McLaren supercar this month just minutes after the new owner drove it off the lot.

Police traffic patrols spotted the 2019 McLaren 600LT travelling at “a high rate of speed” heading westbound on Highway 1, near 15th Street shortly after 10 p.m. on June 17.

The supercar’s speed was clocked at over 160 kilometres per hour in a 90 km/hr zone, said police.

Officers stopped the vehicle on the highway near Cypress Bowl Road, where the driver informed them he had just left the dealership after buying the car 10 minutes earlier.

Police impounded the McLaren for seven days for excessive speeding and handed the driver, a 39-year-old man from Coquitlam, a $368 ticket.

Const. Kevin Goodmurphy of the West Vancouver Police said with summer now in full swing, owners of luxury rides may be more likely to take their supercars out for spin. But traffic patrols aren’t taking a vacation.

Goodmurphy said it’s important with more cars on the road in summer months that drivers obey the rules.
