Burnaby RCMP take exhausted all-night trucker off the road

The Burnaby RCMP’s traffic enforcement team has been promoting its focus on commercial trucks during the past few months. The team has staged a number of sweeps in Burnaby aimed at commercial trucks, finding a shocking number of violations.

The Burnaby RCMP’s traffic enforcement team has been promoting its focus on commercial trucks during the past few months.

The team has staged a number of sweeps in Burnaby aimed at commercial trucks, finding a shocking number of violations.

Monday saw more of the same, but with one exception – a driver officers at first thought was impaired, but who was really exhausted from a long haul without much of a break.

The driver told Burnaby RCMP that he started driving at 10 p.m. Calgary, Alta time to pick up a load, but that it wasn’t ready until midnight. The driver then drove from Calgary to Burnaby with only a 30-minute break before being stopped at 12:30 p.m. Pacific time.

The driver and the truck were then taken off of the road.

The traffic unit was out with New Westminster police traffic officers at Cariboo and 10th Avenue.

In all, police said 17 trucks were found in violation of Burnaby's truck route, with 28 tickets issued and five trucks taken off the road.
