A group of Richmondites who are passionate about the glittering treasures hidden inside rocks are putting on a gem and mineral show this weekend at the Richmond Nature Park.
George Howe, president of the Richmond Gem and Mineral Society, says they’ll show people how to identify different rocks, how they’re sawed open to reveal the beauty inside and how to polish them into beautiful cabochon gems.
“I always enjoyed collecting minerals. What I enjoy now is talking to people about the hobby,” he said.
They’ll also have a silversmithing demonstration to show the basics of how to turn the gems into handmade jewelry.
The show is happening on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Creation and discovery two things Darlene Howe, George’s wife, loves about the hobby.
“One thing that I really fell in love with was sawing the rocks to see what was inside. I was always amazed by the beautiful pictures … or a crystal,” she said. “I just love that part, seeing what the earth has for us all.”
Although they’re based in Richmond, the Howes say it’s not a great place to go rock hunting. But nearby in Point Roberts or Tsawwassen, rock-hunters have been known to find agate. Farther up the Fraser River, near Aggasiz, Howe says he’s found pieces of jade.
Members of the gem and mineral society will be selling their handmade wares on Sunday, and people who have a favourite rock they’d like to know more about are welcome to bring it along and get the pros to identify it.
The members also have some of their rocks on display in the Richmond Museum as part of their Obsessions exhibit showcasing collectors and their collections.
