George Massey Tunnel will be around for a while

Province confirms that bridge project is dead

The City of Delta has stressed how the crossing needs replacement because it's a critical component of Canada’s transportation network, supporting local, provincial, and federal economies, as well as facilitating trade through the Asia-Pacific Gateway.

The 10-lane bridge project that would have replaced the aging George Massey Tunnel won't proceed. Instead, the current crossing will undergo some upgrades and the regional mayors will be consulted on options.

The province confirmed that the project initiated by the previous Liberal government is dead in a long-awaited announcement this morning by Claire Trevena, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, and consultant Stan Cowdell. Options include a smaller bridge, another tunnel as well as keeping the current crossing as part of the new solution.
