The inaugural Bathtub Race & Festival, presented by the Tsawwassen Rotary Club, promises thrills, spills and chills for the whole family.

The all-day event kicks off with the festival at noon this Saturday (Aug. 18) with lots of fun kids’ activities and live entertainment at Centennial Beach.

The Bathtub Race starts at 1 p.m.

Then starting at 4 p.m., the festival moves to Tsawwassen’s Diefenbaker Park for a live concert featuring The Fab Fourever, an internationally award-winning Beatles cover band, food trucks, beer garden and the summer outdoor movie Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales starting at dusk.

Tsawwassen Rotarians have been working hard for the past six months to organize and plan for this free event that is sure to be a highlight of the summer here in South Delta.

“The credit for starting the event has to go to fellow Rotarian James Latheron,” said director of community Blake Cowan. “James has been passionate about this for a long time and pursued it. He contacted Nanaimo and Kitsilano and initially against all odds, got the go-ahead. James has really been the champion on it.”

Cowan said it has been a huge task for the club to organize the event.

“Part of the difficulty is that it is a first time event. There is the uncertainty because we had to get approval from Metro Parks, provincial permissions, so it’s been months – at least six months, but it has all come together,” he said.

As parking at Centennial Beach could be an issue, the club is encouraging the public to make use of their shuttle, which will run from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The shuttle will pick up people every 30 minutes on the hour and half hour from 1988 56th Ave. (the entrance to Tsawwassen – east side of 56th).

“The shuttle then drops people right into the key area for the festival,” said Cowan. “The shuttle is by donation, so we’re hoping that people will donate to Rotary, which is greatly appreciated.”

He said the club expects 10 to 15 participants for the Bathtub Race.

“That number will enable a good race for the racers as well for the crowds to enjoy,” he said. “We really expect a great community event. The club members are working really hard to ensure a great day for the whole family. Fab Fourever – I haven’t seen them, but from what I hear they are a tremendous act. It’s going to be a lot of fun.”
