Vancouver’s colourful West End’s dining scene is global and eclectic, but what the neighbourhood’s been missing is a restaurant focused solely on plant-based eats. Enter Beetbox, a brand new concept aimed at serving up comfort foods that vegans, vegetarians, and omnivores can all enjoy.
Beetbox is the newest venture from GM/Co-owner Justin Tisdall and Chef/Co-owner Bryan Satterford, the duo behind the decidedly more meat-centric Juke Fried Chicken in Chinatown. They were operating a satellite Little Juke in the Davie Street location that will soon debut as Beetbox until recently, when the chance to revamp and reinvent came up.
Launching officially on Oct. 10, Beetbox is a counter-service style spot with 24 seats that will also be primed for take-out and delivery (via DoorDash and Foodora) serving lunch, dinner, and late-night eats.
While often a plant-based restaurant is the endeavour of plant-based eaters, the Beetbox team has relished the challenge – and the differing perspective – of producing food completely free of animal products.
“We worked hard to create a menu that was accessible to everyone, ethical and most importantly — delicious,” says Satterford in a media release. “As an omnivore chef, I was able to approach it from a different angle and design a menu of meat alternatives that has the feel, texture and taste of the real thing.”
What’s on the menu at Beetbox? The emphasis is on familiar comfort food dishes done totally plant-based. There are burgers and sandwiches, like the Chorizo-verde on a Bun and the Fried Chick-un Sandwich, along with sides like tempura-fried onion rings, loaded fries, hearty salads packed with fresh seasonal veg, and hot veggies such as roasted broccoli with a mushroom xo sauce.
For those dining-in, Beetbox is licensed, so there’s local craft beer and vegan-friendly wines and cocktails. The non-alcoholic bev options range from kombucha to plant based shakes made using locally-sourced nut, cashew, and oat mylks.
Beetbox is located at 1074 Davie St. in Vancouver’s West End. They will launch October 10, and their hours will be 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday to Thursday and 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
