After more than two years of construction, North Vancouver commuters can get their first test drive of the new Mountain Highway overpass this weekend.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure announced this week that as of Saturday morning, southbound drivers will begin using the new overpass. Northbound drivers will get access on Sunday morning.

The westbound Highway 1 off-ramp at Mountain Highway will remain open though Lynnmouth Avenue will be for local traffic only, according to the province.

“This new alignment and overpass are part of the Highway 1 Lower Lynn Improvement project, which will significantly shorten commute times and improve safety for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists on the North Shore,” a release from the province stated. “Travellers are asked to follow signs and obey posted speed limits.”

The $198 million project to redo all of the interchanges at the Ironworkers Memorial Second Narrows Crossing bridgehead is expected to last until the end of 2021.
