A 78-year-old woman was killed and six others, including four members of her family, were injured in a Christmas Eve day accident in downtown Vancouver.

The Vancouver Police Department says the fatal collision occurred just before noon on Dec. 24 at the intersection of Cambie and Dunsmuir streets.

A red Hyundai sedan was travelling north on Cambie Street and began making a left turn onto Dunsmuir Street when it collided with a southbound grey Nissan Pathfinder, police say. The five passengers of the Hyundai, all family members, were taken to hospital with injuries ranging from minor to serious. Unfortunately, the 78-year-old woman in the back seat died at hospital.

The two occupants of the Pathfinder were taken to hospital where they were treated for minor injuries and released.

Officers from the VPD’s Collision Investigations Unit are working to determine what may have caused the collision. Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors. This is Vancouver’s 12th fatal collision of 2017.
