Archives: Nirvana play final Canadian shows

This day in Vancouver history: Jan. 3, 1994

Alt rock icons Nirvana play the first of two sold-out shows at the PNE Forum. The concerts marked the final Vancouver appearance for the band, who had previously played at the now-defunct Town Pump in 1990 and two sets at the Commodore Ballroom the following year.

.

Nirvana was wrapping up the final leg of a North American tour in support of its third and final studio album, In Utero, which debuted at number one on the Billboard album charts four months earlier.

The band also gave a comically reluctant interview with CiTR’s Nardwuar the Human Serviette backstage over pizza, in which it is revealed Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love may have first met while soused at a gig by Vancouver hardcore legends DOA in Portland, Ore. Several other unexpected Canadian connections are also awkwardly explored despite the objections of a drunk and belligerent Krist Novoselic.

Three months later, Cobain was found dead in his Seattle home from an apparent suicide.
