In an attempt to get more people exercising, the Vancouver Park Board is pushing out a niche community of athletes from the last place they have to work out. This week on Roundhouse Radio, Vancouver Courier sports editor Megan Stewart talked with Our City host Kirk LaPointe about a story she wrote about two powerlifters — two women in their mid-20s who lift more than double their body weight — who will soon be without a place to train.

At the Mount Pleasant community centre, they use specific, niche equipment like an Olympic weightlifting platform and also use the classic granddaddy of all weight rooms, which is the bench press. But next week the Vancouver Park Board will remove the platform and both bench presses from the gym, leaving none of the city’s 12 public fitness centres with this equipment.
