Burnaby planning for pedestrian bridge over Highway 1

Council approved a $500,000 feasibility study to explore where and how a new overpass could be built

Burnaby could build a pedestrian overpass over Highway 1 like this recently completed project in Abbotsford.

The City of Burnaby is planning to build a pedestrian overpass over Highway 1 to better connect the city’s parks.

City council has approved a $500,000 feasibility study for the potential project. The money will come from Burnaby’s community benefit funds.

“(Feasibility study) work to include mapping of environmentally sensitive areas, soils condition with geotechnical analysis, defining constraints of development next to the highway, restrictions of travel modes within Burnaby Regional Park, conflicts with overhead and at-grade hydro infrastructure, underground utilities will be undertaken,” city staff wrote in a report.

The footbridge would ideally connect walking paths in Burnaby’s three major parks (Burnaby Lake Park, Deer Lake Park and Robert Burnaby Park), according to the staff report.

“I don’t know who came up with this idea, but it’s great,” Coun. Nick Volkow said. “I’ve had, over the years, a number of people approach me in regard to this very issue. I look forward to the report.”
