The City of Vancouver is looking for interesting designs to beautify its new bike racks.

“We know there are creative people out there who can dream up a bike rack that is creative and will make our public spaces more beautiful and interesting, and we are looking forward to seeing what they come back with,” said Margaret Wittgens, director of public space and street use.

Designs should be creative, original, have space to hold two bikes and be able to be fabricated in a cost-effective way.

The contest starts today and the deadline to submit a design is May 13. The shortlist will be announced in early June. Winning designers will be announced in August and will receive up to $2,000. There will be prizes for finalists and People’s Choice Award winners. Finalist designs will be unveiled to the public and winners will be announced in the summer.

The city will manufacture the winning bike rack designs and install them at various locations throughout Vancouver starting in the fall.
