I have yet to attend one of Richard Wolaks Food Talks events, but I did take part in his Tasting Plates Summer Edition Tour in June and it was exceptional.
The upcoming Food Talks Vol. 3 event in August is the third in a summer series, each of which features five speakers considered to be movers and shakers in the food community.
Wolak, who writes the popular Vancouver Foodster blog, created Food Talks to educate people about the food they eat so the event is just as much about awareness as about trends and lifestyle.
Food Talks is also an opportunity to meet and mingle with others passionate about food over appetizers and wine while asking questions from the panel of experts, including Eric Pateman, president and founder of Edible Canada; Zach Berman and Ryan Slater, co-founders of the Juice Truck; Lee and Patrick Murphy, co-owners of Vista D-oro Farms and Winery; Mary Mackay, head baker and co-owner of Terra Breads; and Preet Marwaha, founder of Organic Lives. The appetizers featured will be the creation of Matthew Richmond, executive chef of Hidden Restaurant at the Westin Grand, 433 Robson St., where the event takes place Aug. 14 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Tickets are on sale now. The theme for this years Illuminares festival is Let your Bright Light Shine!
So even if you havent taken the time to make your own lantern, organizers encourage you to bring something to illuminate the night. That could include something electronic or merely your ebullient personality.
Illuminares runs at Trout Lake at 6 p.m., Saturday July 21, with areas for the public to install illuminated works, along with a music space where community and professional musicians will jam together. Community groups with installations can access the park at 5 p.m. If your work is particularly large or requires more setup time, please contact the office and theyll work with you to ensure you fulfill your vision. The procession begins at 9:45 p.m. and will be led by three bands, which will depart from locations around the lake. Simply follow a band and youll be lead to the finale spot at the northeast corner of the park. The grand finale includes a spectacular 30-person fire show by Radiant Heat at 10:15. Remember there is no parking at Trout Lake or in any of the nearby neighbourhoods, so travel by transit, bike or foot is advised. All sales are cash only for admission, food and lanterns. An ATM will be available once you get into the festival.
