'It's raining, can I get a hell yeah': Vancouverites rejoice in weather change

You know you're in Vancouver when people post on social media they're happy it's raining

The rain is coming.

Vancouverites breathed a sigh of relief this morning when they looked out their windows and saw rain clouds.

After being smothered by smoke filled skies from B.C wildfires and breaking records for the longest streak of air quality advisories since the 1980s – 11 days from Aug. 13 to 23 – things were finally starting to go back to the way Vancouverites like them on Saturday.

A forecast of temperatures between 14C and 17C and a sprinkling of rain. Perfect.

On Friday, people rejoiced as the sky and mountain views finally reappeared, and the city was officially without an air quality advisory from Metro Vancouver.

This year has seen 18 advisories, and we’re bound to see more given the hundreds of fires still burning throughout the Interior, on Vancouver Island and in Washington State.

“While these fires continue to burn, changing weather conditions have the potential to bring wildfire smoke into the region again,” a Metro Vancouver news release states.

But for now… Vancouverites have taken to social media to express their delight in the heavens opening up, even if it’s just a little bit.

Environment Canada meteorologist Alyssa Charbonneau said residents could expect light rain over the weekend.

“We’re not expecting a heavy rain storm, but we are going to have isolated showers,” she told the Courier.

“Showers are expected to tapper off this afternoon before returning overnight and into Sunday morning.”

She said Vancouver would probably have between 2mm and 4mm of rainfall.

“It may not do a lot for our rain totals, but it is a nice relief from what we’ve been having,” Charbonneau said.

On Monday and Tuesday, the rain will dry up and temperatures are set to warm up to around 20C, but don’t worry too much, the clouds are expected to return by mid-week.

“On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday we’ll be back to a similar weather pattern. It will be cloudy with a chance of showers,” Charbonneau said.

Just the way Vancouverites like it.
