Travellers are being encouraged to use the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge on Saturday and Sunday instead of the Lions Gate.

It’s probably best to avoid the Lions Gate Bridge altogether this weekend, as delays and closures are expected for both Saturday and Sunday.

Crews will be working overnight both evenings and the following lane closures will be in effect:

  •  one lane, open in each direction from 8 to 10:30 p.m. on Saturday night
  •  single-lane, alternating traffic from 10:30 p.m. on Saturday until 8:30 a.m. on Sunday morning.

Single-lane, alternating traffic has been scheduled to begin late Saturday evening to give traffic time to get out of Dodge after the BC Lions’ season opener.

The sidewalk on the bridge will remain open for pedestrians and cyclists.

The work being done includes the removal of temporary steel plates, asphalt removal and line painting.

“All drivers can expect heavy traffic volumes and delays,” the transportation ministry said in a news release. “They should allow for extra time, and are encouraged to use the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge as an alternative route.”

Travellers are reminded to obey signs and traffic control personnel, and watch for workers.
